GST e-invoicing for gym owners: a 5-minute guide

TL;DR

  • 1GST e-invoicing is mandatory for B2B invoices once turnover crosses ₹5 Cr
  • 2Every B2B invoice must be registered with GSTN and get an IRN
  • 3B2C invoices are exempt — but become mandatory at higher thresholds

If your gym chain just crossed ₹5 Cr in annual turnover, congratulations. You also just inherited a tax obligation that will bite you on the first GSTR-1 filing if you ignore it.

What is e-invoicing

Electronic invoicing under GST means every B2B invoice you issue (corporate memberships, B2B sales) has to be registered with the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) before you send it to the customer. The IRP returns an Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a signed JSON. That JSON is your legal invoice.

Who needs to e-invoice

  • > ₹5 Cr aggregate turnover — mandatory for B2B invoices
  • > ₹10 Cr aggregate turnover — also includes some B2C
  • Below ₹5 Cr — voluntary today, may become mandatory at lower thresholds in future

What changes operationally

Your invoices must include an IRN, a QR code, and a digital signature. The fields the IRP requires are stricter than a normal GST invoice — HSN code, place of supply, taxable value, etc., all need to match exactly. A mistake here is a return rejection.

How AskBooks handles this

AskBooks (our built-in ERP) registers every B2B invoice with the IRP automatically the moment you create it. The IRN, QR code, and signed JSON are attached to the invoice PDF, and the e-invoice schema is mapped to your AskFitness service catalogue (HSN 9985 / 998314 / 9993, depending on what you sell).

AskBooks customers cross the ₹5 Cr threshold and turn on e-invoicing in under 10 minutes. We handle the IRP enrolment, the GSTIN mapping, and the IRN registration. You sign off, and you are filing-compliant the same day.

Common pitfalls

  • Forgetting that credit notes also need IRN registration
  • Cancelled invoices must be cancelled on the IRP within 24 hours
  • GSTR-1 is auto-populated from e-invoiced data — manual edits cause mismatch flags

The mechanics of e-invoicing are not the hard part. The hard part is making it disappear into your daily ops so you never think about it.
